Lois Lowrey

Lois Lowrey was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 20, 1937. She was the middle child of three.  Her father was in the army so she traveled a lot. She got married, to a naval officer, when she was 19 years old and produced four kids.

Throughout her life Lois has lost many people, Most notably her father. He suffered memory loss, which may have influenced her book "the Giver" as it stresses the importance of human interaction and memories.

In her words "The Giver - and the two books that follow it and make a trilogy (soon to be a quartet! I've just finished the fourth book!), Gathering Blue and Messenger - take place against the background of very different cultures and times. Though they are broader in scope than my earlier books, they nonetheless speak to the same concern: the vital need of people to be aware of their interdependence, not only with each other, but with the world and its environment"(Lois Lowrey).
